Rethinking the problem...

While working on converting some computer files into another format, I pulled up a program I have used often to do this. I expected no problems. Imagine my shock when the program not only didn't work, but it gave me no hint as to the problem.  I played with it for a couple of hours, figured I'd think more clearly in the morning, and went to bed expecting everything to be fine with a new day.

It wasn't. For five hours, I did everything I knew how to make the conversion proceed properly.  I won't go into all the computer tricks I tried, because none of them work.  Finally, (sheesh), I decided to pray about the problem.

My prayer was simple. I knew there was one divine Mind that governs all, and I was part of that "all."  There was no answer too hard, too complicated, too impossible, because God gives us all we need, and that includes every right idea. The work I was doing on the computer was necessary, and nothing could stand in the way of accomplishing my task.  I needed to be still and listen for the angel message.

It came, almost instantly.  The answer was simple and the task proceeded to be completed in about fifteen minutes.  Not only was I thrilled to have the job done, I was even happier that I'd taken my thought in the right path and acknowledged God's control and government in every aspect of my life and work. To say I was grateful is a gross understatement.

Frustration Overcome by Love

Sometimes I find myself getting angry easily at little things and sometimes just feeling nothing but frustration.  Being unemployed can kind of bring out the not so great side of me. I admit, I hate feeling frustrated all the time. I don’t want to be living with this feeling. But at a lecture called Annual Meeting held by The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston I realize that I have been doing something wrong in the way that I look at things, my thinking has not been all that clear or loving.  For the longest time I have been resenting the fact that while all my other friends have been receiving wonderful jobs (most of them right out of school), I have had no such luck in even nailing an interview, despite the copious amounts of applications I have sent all over.

At times I have felt that my religion, the one that is supposed to help me overcome difficult situations easily, has been letting me down.  Well today I realized I’ve been going about my problem all wrong.  I have been forgetting the most fundamental part about being a Christian Scientist, and that is being CHRISTIAN.  If I just led my life more by the first commandment, love thy neighbor as thyself, then I can make steps towards the science part, the healing. I need to be a better Christian.  Once I replaced the angry/frustrated feelings with that of nothing but love for everyone, did I start to feel progress.
For those of you who might be in a similar situation as me I assure you that despite the feeling of hopelessness/sadness/frustration/despair, you don’t need to let it consume you.  John, from the Bible, knew what he was talking about when he said “God is Love.” ( 1 John 4:8)  but the whole quote actually is “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”  (English Standard Version)
To me, not only does God love us, but we need to show God we love him, and we can do this by expressing the love he gives us.  After some reevaluation of my attitude, I realized there was absolutely no reason I should let other people’s lives influence mine. I needed to see them in a more loving light and not one of hate.  So I went through and thought of every good quality each of my friends possessed, and why I thought of them as a friend in the first place, and after a while, I was no longer jealous or upset.  I knew then, and I still know now, that Love (another name for God) will meet my needs.

Meeting a Need in the Reading Room

A Church Alive segment recently stopped me, mentally, in my tracks.  The speakers said that seekers are lead to the Reading Room when WE are serving.  I know for a fact this is true.

Our RR is tucked back from the street, and as a way to let people know we're there, we put a cart on the sidewalk with literature.  On a day I wouldn't normally been there, I watched from our window as a woman scooped up just about every Sentinel and Journal from the cart, crossed the street, and sat at the outdoor table of the McDonald's across the street. She sipped a drink and read and read.  I prayed she was finding what she needed. After a while, I  noticed she'd left.

Busy with a housekeeping task, I was surprised when a couple of hours later, she came through the door.  "I had to come in, even though I was on my way home," she explained. "This is my day off, and I am so upset I felt I had to open your door."

I asked her to sit across from me, and the story poured out.  She was head housekeeper at a chain hotel near a popular mall and the week before, she'd discovered a dead woman in one of the hotel's rooms. It appeared to be a suicide.  Not only was the image stuck in a loop in her head, she was concerned about the whys and what would make this dear person take her life, and furthermore, whether the police had investigated the circumstances sufficiently to make sure it wasn't a suspicious passing.

Taking a deep breath, I realized why she'd come in that day. This dear lady had no idea I'd been a criminal lawyer in years past. I'd even taken a state forensics class for the non-forensics specialist.

First, I had to help her see that life is deathless, no matter what the human picture. We discussed how this woman, seemingly gone, was still working out her salvation and going about her Father's business. The human picture didn't keep her from Life, because she expressed Life as a reflection of her Father-Mother, God.

My friend was calming down. The tears stopped. But she worried still that, maybe, there'd been foul play, and that the police didn't seem interested in that possibility.  I assured her that there was nothing hidden that would not be revealed, and that proper steps were being taken, later, to make sure that humanly, justice would be served.

Then a sad story poured forth about her marriage, her life, and her job. One by one, the spiritual answers came and Bible quotes, which she knew, comforted her.  I knew, for a surety, that I wasn't coming up with these responses, because I didn't even have to think, the words poured out without hesitation.

She left with a copy of Science and Health and more periodicals with articles on some of the topics we'd covered.  I wasn't to hear from her, or see her, for a year.

A year to the day, and I was in the Reading Room.  My friend came in, smiling, asking if I remembered her. Of course I did, and I asked how she was.  She said life was better, and that she'd been reading Science and Health whenever her husband wasn't around, since he didn't approve.  Yet she persisted and was genuinely grateful for the small changes for the better that had resulted.  A sincere seeker of Truth, on all levels, she wanted to thank me in person.

Little did she know, I wasn't regularly serving in the Reading Room on the two days she'd found me. God lead her and me to meet, and God clearly was lead counsel in this case.

Words of the solo from Sunday, May 6

Friends,

Because of the overwhelming response to the beautiful words of the solo we heard last Sunday, we are posting the words to that piece of music -- Enjoy the inspiration!

Words of the Solo on May 6, 2012
“A HEAVEN ON EARTH”
By Sally DeFord

When we kneel in prayer with humble hearts, to invite His spirit in,
When we live each day by the light of faith, and put our trust in Him,
When our souls delight in truth and right and things of eternal worth,
Then the Savior will come and abide in our home and make it a heaven on earth.
When our hearts are turned to loved ones here, and to those who’ve gone before,
When we freely share one another’s joy,
and mourn with those who mourn,
When we offer Him our willing hands and serve Him with all our strength,
Then the Savior will come and abide in our home, and make it a heaven on earth.
When we offer up our grateful praise for each perfect gift of God,
When we find our safety in His commands and make His word our law,
When we set aside our worldly cares to seek after heaven first,
Then the Savior will come and abide in our home, and make it a heaven on earth……
and make it a heaven on earth.

New Hymn -- new inspiration

Last night we sang a new hymn at our Wednesday evening meeting.  It was from the Hymnal Supplement, Hymn #462.  This hymn contains the thought that there is a prayer that I can always pray -- no matter what the circumstances, "Simply praising Him."  What a wonderful and simple thought to treasure as we go through our daily routines, or as we face troubling times.  The simple choice is ours.  Each moment of our busy day we can choose to   "Praise the Creator.  Let all within me sing!"

I am looking forward to a bright, happy, praise-filled day!

New Beginnings

I'm so grateful that each morning is a new beginning with our Father-Mother
God. (Sometimes I need new beginnings in the middle of the day too!)

That I can resolve to hold my thinking, my actions and my words to a higher standard right this minute keeps me alert.

Here's my review of each day:

Did my words about, or to someone, bless or lift them?

Did my thoughts tend to heal the current news of our government and world conditions?

Are my actions motivated by love for my fellow man?

Does my love for my fellow man motivate me to do more than I am doing?

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science states in her seminal textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,  "If you believe in and practise wrong knowingly, you can at once change your course  and do right."

"What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds."

"Desire is prayer..."

So my daily prayer is from Psalms 143:8

"Cause me to hear thy loving-kindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee."

A Different Take on Things

There is a passage in the Bible (Phil. 4:7) that states, "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

I was surprised recently when I heard someone reference this line with the interpretation that "passeth" meant "surpasses" or "is beyond" understanding.  This view reduces the "peace of God" to an unknowable mystery with only a hope that the last part of that statement will be true.  From the very first time I read this passage I thought that "passeth" was an old fashioned way of saying "passes."  To me this is a statement of divine activity.

Understanding flows from (passes/paseth) from God to man.  The children of God, you and me, created in His image after His likeness as stated in Genesis, reflect every element of that source.  I find this to be a comforting statement, bringing with it "the peace of God."

The Prayerful Mechanic was my post and is an example of a need being met by the recognition that understanding isn't an internal chemical or electrical mental process.  Rather, it is an expression of God completely
demonstratable all the time, especially when we need it most.

Looking for God?

People all over the planet are looking for God these days.  And rightly so, since problems and conditions are frequently bigger than we can handle ourselves. Loneliness, starvation, war, political unrest, maybe a nagging physical problem, to name a few.   Even though we may look for Him (or Her) out there somewhere, ultimately true spirituality can be found within each of us. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.” We already possess the consciousness that recognizes and experiences the Supreme Being and the power that settles our problems and harmonizes all things. We just need to tap into that divine consciousness more deeply.

Once we start looking within our minds and hearts for solutions, what will we find? There may be some mental or moral debris we want to get rid of that needs to be cleared out. The one true God Christ told us about is just what is needed to clean house.  Here’s where I find Christian Science so helpful. It articulates the very nature and power of Deity better than any other source I know, and how to apply that nature and power to overcome debilitating thoughts and tendencies.

For instance, Science and Health, written by Mary Baker Eddy, and translated into many languages, gathers specific synonyms and qualities of God used in the Bible. They in turn enable us to strengthen and focus our prayers far more than we may have thought possible. Some of those synonyms are Life, Mind, Truth, Love, Principle (law), Spirit, Soul. And qualities like love, ever presence, infinite freedom,  all-providing. When you consider that these are already within your grasp, your own consciousness, think of the potential for reformation and healing right at hand! Each one gives us an avenue to explore and utilize with divine power.

The link, spirituality.com, may lead you to discover the good within yourself you know is there but haven’t found yet.    ///

Fall from a Bike

It's been a while since I've been on my ancient (I think it almost qualifies as an antique!) bicycle, but when my daughter challenged me to take it for a spin, I couldn't resist. But I hadn't gone ten feet when my feet slipped off the pedals and I crashed onto the driveway. One of the handlebars hooked me in the rib cage, and I heard an odd noise, followed by extreme pain when I tried to move.

I really didn't have time that day, or in the next week, to be immobile. I immediately rose with the help of my family, and decided I had to know that this event had never occurred in God's kingdom if I was to gain my dominion over the situation. Taking a stand wasn't easy, as the pain seemed, and that is all it could do, "seem," intense. I kept on with my chores, knowing I was a spiritual idea, but the pain wasn't getting better. I asked, at one point when I needed immediate help, for my husband's metaphysical support. I knew he'd been working all along, and he said to me "a spiritual idea can have no impact with a material object." The proverbial light bulb went off. I'd been knowing I was God's spiritual child, but I'd never specifically denied the impact issue.

I continued with this truth for the next week or so, every time it seemed I couldn't sleep comfortably or do something that needed doing. About ten days later, I felt truly free as I lifted some heavy boxes and slept on the seemingly affected side without pain. To say I was grateful for this evidence of God's care is an understatement. I was also grateful for my husband's metaphysical clarity about the situation, and how my need was quickly and completely met.

Thought Awakened

Forty five years ago, my youngest brother was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome. Labeled for life with restrictions attached! I, too, seemed to have been mesmerized by this mortal belief throughout the years. Occasionally, I would specifically work to see him as God’s spiritual idea forever being unfolded. However, a passage from this week’s lesson, entitled Life, found in the Christian Science Quarterly, has brought unexpected clarity to my thinking. I’d like to share this passage with you. It can be found on page 243, line 32 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

“Inasmuch as God is good and the fount of all being, He does not produce moral or physical deformity; therefore such deformity is not real, but is illusion, the mirage of error. Divine Science reveals these grand facts. On their basis Jesus demonstrated Life, never fearing nor obeying error in any form.”

Although I have read this passage before, I have now been re-awakened to stand porter and guard my thoughts against erroneous thinking!

Clearer Vision

I am a Christian Scientist who wears glasses.  You may think this is a contradiction.  Why hasn't that been healed?  Fair question.  Why does one situation persist while another, also dealing with my eyes, as is the case with this posting, is healed quickly and completely?  Another fair question.

First, I don't believe there is any condition which the presence of omnipotent Mind cannot bring into perfect harmony, the realm of the real.  Mrs. Eddy asks in Science and Health "What cannot God do?"(135:20)  Jesus made repeated encouraging statements about his followers' ability to replicate his healing power.  Most notably, for me, is, "I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." (John 14: 12)  There are also several instances where he healed blindness.

Speaking for myself only, I think the difference lies in dedication and focus.  A problem of seeming urgency gets my full attention while something less dramatic tends to be tolerated or accommodated.  Rather than focus on what I have yet to demonstrate, I choose to express my genuine gratitude for the healings that I have experienced.

Last summer, during a routine eye exam, my optometrist became very concerned that the internal pressure in one eye was much lower than it should be and wanted me to be examined by a specialist.  I put it off for several weeks, all the time praying specifically about my vision, knowing that it was a spiritual quality and not a material condition.  When he asked me about the results and I hadn't even made an appointment, I knew I needed to do this in order to calm his concerns.

No mention of decreased pressure was made at the initial examination.  However, another situation presented itself.  Both eyes had a number of open sores on the irises.  After warning me of the potential for total blindness, the examining physician wrote several prescriptions for antibiotics and eye drops.  It surprised her, and not in a good way, when I said that I would address the situation differently.  I did not say "prayerfully" and I should have.

Her response was, "Well, you can't just wish this away."  I had no intention of trying to do that.  She insisted on a follow-up exam within a week.

At that exam there had been sufficient progress that she no longer pressed for the drops and ointment.  Instead, she noted healing was taking place when she said, "Whatever you're doing -- keep doing it."  Another exam was scheduled.

At this third exam she declared all the sores had healed.  There was a big BUT.  The "but" was that the healing process had left scars where each sore had been.  She told me that I was very lucky that the sores had not been over the pupils because the obstruction resulting form the scars would have left permanent blind spots.

God doesn't lead us part way.  Omnipotence doesn't provide partial victories.  There was still work to do.  There was no compromising with this error.  I continued my prayers, seeing myself as God sees me, perfect.

A  subsequent exam with my regular optometrist revealed that neither problem existed or left any evidence of ever having existed.  Pressure was normal.   There were no scars.

I'm a Christian Scientist who still wears glasses, but with a clearer sense of vision.

Takin' it to the Streets!

                                           Watermelon Festival!!

Picture a townhouse-style Reading Room tucked between two buildings that carry facades to the sidewalk. Painted a lively yellow with a bright blue awning, adorned with a perky flower bed awash with color, the Reading Room has perched in its niche on Cary Street for years. Doing okay. Hanging in there.

Now imagine a street festival that attracts approximately a 140-150,000 people meandering the closed streets on a hot August day, right in front of the Reading Room. For one Sunday a year, the Carytown Watermelon Festival converts Cary Street in Richmond,Virginia, into a big party. A street party. Music, food vendors, families with strollers and dogs on leashes. What does the Reading Room do?

First, we open our doors for a few hours on that Sunday afternoon. Nothing happens. Our light is definitely not shining. The Reading Room tries a few years of putting out a table with Reading Room stock in front, manned by a couple of volunteers. No one is too excited about the effort. They offer free cups of water to the hot and thirsty. Almost no one stops by to chat or survey the Reading Room wares. Just too hard a job, some felt. Too difficult to share Christian Science is such a hurly-burly atmosphere.

Does the church give up and go back to closing up for the festival?

No way. The church has learned its lesson. Hiding a light under a bushel is a bummer. The next year, a generous budget is set. The church rents two spaces in the middle of the street, sets up tents and chairs, sponsors a Christian Science lecture for the middle of the festival day, and orders extras of everything. A couple hundred copies of Science and Health in bright blue paperback. A couple hundred blue Bibles. People who never heard of Christian Science sit in the lawn chairs under the tent and hear a great lecture. Several stay and ask questions of the speaker, Sarah Hyatt. Passers-by hear a phrase, stop dead in their tracks and listen from the street. The Reading Room is involved and part of the festival.

Yet somehow that pesky bushel gets popped over the Reading Room’s candle once more. Several lean years follow, but the church is praying its way to the street once more.

Another group gathers to try a tent in the street. This time, many candles will be lit. Pretty green T-shirts with “God Heals, ask me how” printed on the back, and the Cross and Crown symbol on the front shoulder in vivid pink are worn by church members. Monitors are rolled and tied with pink and green ribbons attached to equally festive helium balloons emblazoned with “Christian Science Reading Room, 3431 West Cary Street,” and handed out to passers-by. Hundreds of free Sentinels are accepted by the curious. Festival-goers stop in the tent and chat, maybe to escape the August heat, but also out of curiosity. They ask if the tent belongs to Scientology (which has a new building a block down the street). What fun to explain we’re not. Tent workers get tons of chances to talk about Christian Science and share healings they’ve experienced in their own lives.

The next year, the church orders even more Monitors, more Sentinels for giveaways. And they’re accepted by the passers-by. With each year, and increased orders for periodicals, the volunteers find they’re able to hand out all of them. Each gift to a festival-goer opens a door to a conversation, a chance to talk about God and Christian Science, and spiritual healing.

People head inside to the Reading Room proper, where volunteers answer more questions. The Reading Room stock inside grows depleted. The day is alight with candles without bushels.

More visitors, simple seekers of Truth, visit after the Festival than ever before. The Reading Room has taken it to the streets, and the streets have found the Reading Room. How very grateful the church is for this tangible evidence of the efficacy of prayer.

Masks

Masks. Halloween stores are filled with them. Did you see the TV show FACE OFF? Over its course, makeup artists competed to see who could create the most effective masks from makeup and prostheses. The results were astounding; aliens, men into women, animals, and even plants who were, underneath it all, just people.
We all wear them. Sometimes it involves makeup, sometimes it's an expression. Smiling when inside, we're screaming. A serious expression when we really want to laugh. Are we ever without a mask? Yes.

When we're living with prayer. Living the life God has given us. When we walk with God, there's no need to hide behind a mask of any sort. We're free to express all the God-like qualities with which we are, every one of us, endowed.

Error wears a mask, too. Error is another name for anything God didn't make. And if God didn't make it, we can't have it. Sometimes error wears a charming mask, trying to lead us into the temptation of falling into what it wants us to do. And it's nothing that's good for us, that's for sure.

How can we see through the masks? See things as God sees them. If you look with the eyes of Love reflecting Love, you'll never be fooled.  Seeing the real man and woman as God created them, perfect, complete, and loving, is my daily goal.

The Prayerful Mechanic

I was cutting grass with a three-blade, 48 inch deck walk behind mower when a bungee cord hanging from a bracket came loose, dropped onto the deck, and wedged itself into the blade driver. Then it twisted itself and threw the drive belt off, halting the mower and my day.

I'm not a mechanic by nature. Something either works, or it doesn't.  The mower clearly wasn't working, and even th ugh I was able to pull the bungee cord out, it left a twisted  drive belt on the mower's deck. I couldn't figure out how to put the belt back on.  Every attempt resulted in several feet of slack belt and an inoperable mower.

Having exhausted every idea I  had, I felt I had no option but to load up the mower and take it to a mechanic. I then realized I could pray about this problem.  As a Christian Scientist, I understand God to be Mind, the source of all ideas.  Mary Baker Eddy begins the definition of God as "The Great I AM: The all-knowing..."  I reasoned that the solution  to this mechanical problem was known to God, and that there could never be a problem beyond God's control.  Made as the reflection of this Mind, I had the solution already. I knew the communication was always from God to Man.

Just that quickly, what needed to be done became apparent.  I took the belt completely off, straightened out the twists, and began with a different sequence to reattach it.  Immediately, the damage was repaired.
Before returning to work, I finished this "healing" by expressing gratitude for the immediate availability of God's help and support.

Angry Birds

Have you played the game Angry Birds? It's filled with different situations where graphic birds try to blow up green pigs. Silly, I know, but it lead me to think about how we can pray.

The targeted pigs appear to be protected by glass, wood, and stone fortresses, often very difficult for the little birds to penetrate. While playing the game with an eight year old little boy, we discussed the tactics he should take when launching the attacking "angry birds," in order take out the fortresses and earn points by blowing up the taunting pigs. We came up with specific ideas and they worked!

It came to me that this was a good example of how to pray about taking out the green pigs of mortal mind. We don't need to start praying in a massive launch of scattered prayer, but instead, we can be lead to pray logically and thoughtfully about how to counter any entrenched, stubborn, or lingering lie about ourselves or anyone else. The right idea will come to us through focused, specific prayer, because we can see any dire situation as God sees it. Untrue. Not impenetrable. There is no power apart from God, and that power is laser-like and swift to reveal the nothingness of mortal mind, error. The birds of our prayer can easily and successfully blow up those unreal green pigs.

Our Dear Dog

Was clearly not feeling well. She hadn't been eating normally, but she was still her loving self. We put her to bed, knowing the Truth about her, that she was a beloved creature, a pure expression of Love. About one in the morning, I awoke and went to her room downstairs to check on her. The picture was alarming. I tried to make her comfortable, and then I began to pray big time. I began by seeing her as God sees her, perfect, complete, and a delightful expression of joy. The love she expresses for everyone couldn't be dimmed or taken from her. Her real identity is spiritual, untouched by the picture before my eyes. I prayed until I felt calmer, then I went back to my bed to pray some more. Every time I awoke, which was often, I returned to my prayers, knowing God was in control, until I was able to feel calm again. Fear tried often to creep into my consciousness, but I refused to succumb. The evidence was false, and I wasn't going to buy into an untrue picture.

The next morning, she greeted us with her normal happy demeanor, and the ugly physical picture disappeared. She was completely happy and well.

The Child of God

The newspapers the past few days have featured the photograph of a well-known "terrorist" who was killed in a US military maneuver.

This individual clearly saw himself as outside the law and, as is the case with all sin, this carried with it its own punishment. Sin and punishment always travel together, you can't one without the other. There are many different definitons of the concept "sin". One is:  to miss the mark.  Another is: to break the First Commandment. When we miss the mark, aren't we letting something else beside Love, Truth, Principle, guide our actions and therefore, be god to us?

However, it is important to remember that what we accept as true about a man becomes our reality. Jesus never called a man by a false, sinful name.  He knew the shortcomings of the prostitute, the tax collector, the doubters.
When a leper stood in front of him asking for a healing, although everyone around him knew and saw a man that was a leper, Jesus clearly was seeing only the dearly loved son of God. This view of him, healed him so everyone around could also see God's pure man.

We must not be fooled into believing false lables under anyone's picture. God never made any such man. It is a picture of a counterfeit, a distortion of God's creation. We see what we believe. And we get what we see.

PROGRESS

In a sermon titled "THE PEOPLE'S IDEA OF GOD",  Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "Every step of progress is a step more spiritual."

Sometimes we worry that we are making a wrong decision. A Sunday School student recently asked me, "How do you know you are obeying what God wants you to do, instead of willfully deciding to do what YOU think you want to do?

Prayer for me means lots of listening. God knows what we need and what will be best for our progress. He is always guiding us and if we get quiet with our questions, we will be able to discern His guidance. The Bible tells us, "Be still and know that I am God." (And you are not! LET God show you the way.)

I love the advice I find in Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures, the Christian Scientist's textbook. When faced with two decisions, neither of which seems the absolute perfect choice, just always choose the better one. This way you work your way up to a perfect solution a step at a time. If we mistake our way and make a decision that we think, looking back, may have been a mistake, trust that God is opening the way for us to be in our right place. Sometimes there is something to learn on the way!

Grief and Loss Healed

A few years ago just after my grandfather passed away, my sister and I went to visit our dad in another state. During our visit we went hiking in a rural mountain area. At one of the places we stopped to view the scenery, we left our cellphones and several other items in my dad's truck. While we were away from the truck someone broke in and stole several things including our cellphones and even tried to set the truck on fire. After making this discovery and overcoming the initial shock, we drove to the local police station. A report was filed, but there seemed little that could be done. While we were at the police station waiting for someone to take our statement, I was affirming that God's man does not steal.

That night the weekly Wednesday evening testimony meeting was held at the local Christian Science Society. During this meeting I stood up and gave gratitude for God's protection that day. Even though things had been stolen from my dad's truck, no one had harmed us, and the attempt to burn my dad's truck was unsuccessful. As soon as I stood up to give this testimony, the feelings of fear from that day dissolved.

I called a Christian Science practitioner to help pray with me. She said that we needed to work on a sense of loss relating to the passing away of my grandfather and the things that were stolen.

A few weeks later, it was determined that the person responsible for the theft was from a prominent and well to do family in that area and that he had become involved with illegal drugs. As a result of this his family had disowned him. It became clear to me that what this person needed was love. At that moment I forgave this person and asked God to let him know that he is loved.

After this I felt a sense of peace and any fear or sense of being violated went away. Most everything that was taken from the truck was recovered and those things that were not were easily replaced or let go of.

I am grateful for this opportunity to learn more about God's love for his children.

Prayer for Childen

From Matthew 19:13
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

We feel very fortunate to have Christian Science while raising our children. Every need has been met quickly and with success, from bloody noses to bullying.  Fevers, colds, school problems, every single little (and seemingly big) thing has been resolved through prayer.  A child-like thought, innocent and pure, can be found in everyone, from an infant to seeming senior citizens.  This purity of thought can't help but respond to the Truth, and it does.

Every child deserves to be loved, cared for, and protected, and who better to do this than our Heavenly Father-Mother, God?  By knowing that God is always our children's parent, we've been able to let go of false responsibilities and see through the clouds of the human picture. God is always with them, guarding, guiding, and protecting them.  Doing so always has, and always will, enable our children to live, free and pure, untouched by anything that would try to taint them.

Sudden Healing

Saturday, as I was getting dressed for work, my chest began to ache.  I hurt from armpit to armpit, neck to waist.

My first thoughts were neither metaphysical nor spiritual.  I thought, "I must have pulled something.  It'll go away."  I know better.  To look for a cause for a problem is to deny that God, good, is the only cause.  To believe that a problem has a cause and is real is to believe that God can be absent from His creation, that man is not the reflection of God, the image and likeness of God as Genesis puts it.  These ideas came to me later.

The pain persisted.  As I was leaving the house I began to wonder what it was.  Was it serious.  What if...

Suddenly the first lines of one of my favorite hymns (342) filled my thought.

This is the day the Lord hath made.
              Be glad, give thanks, rejoice.
              Stand in His presence, unafraid.
In praise lift up your voice.

By the time I reached the word "unafraid" the pain vanished.  So did the fear, the What if's.  I took the time, right there, standing in my driveway to thank God for being there and for the realization that I was in His presence.  I was grateful to recognize that my day was made by God and He was in total control.

It was a productive, happy day.

The Angels of His Presence

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways.” (Ps 91: 11)

Throughout the Bible, when angels are identified as such, they are often portrayed as men. Lot protected the two strangers from the townspeople in Sodom. Jacob wrestled with a “man” at Peniel. (Remember, he was left alone.) In the New Testament there is the familiar story of (male) Gabriel visiting Mary and Joseph, telling them the nature and role of their son to be, Jesus. An angel appeared to the shepherds which prompted them to go to Bethlehem (Luke2: 8-15) And “angels came and ministered” unto Jesus when he overcame temptation in the wilderness. Angels also play a significant role supporting and protecting Paul’s establishment of the early churches, opening prison gates, loosening chains, and leading him safely out of town when needed. Finally, in Revelation, Michael is portrayed as a warrior leading a host of “his angels” in the final conflict with the Great Red Dragon. Throughout the Bible, God’s everpresence is exemplified by angels. They inspire, comfort, protect, and guide.

Over the centuries angels have been depicted in art as winged and female. Are they male or female or something else entirely?

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science focuses on the spiritual nature of angels. In the Glossary of Science and Health, part of the definition of angels is, “God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect;” (S+H 581: 4-5) Elsewhere she states, “Angels are pure thoughts from God, winged with Truth and Love, no matter what their individualism may be.” (S+H 298: 28-30).

When I’m praying my way through a problem, seeking healing or direction, I expect and anticipate an answer. God, Divine Mind, the All-knowing, is reflected in creativity and intelligence. As His child, made in His image and likeness, I know that all I’ll ever need is always, already available to me through Divine Love. Jesus uses the example of a father being asked by his son for bread or a fish, which he would not ignore or pervert, to make the point, “how much more your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask of him?” (Matt. 7:8-11) Our role is to willingly open our thought to ideas, suggestions, and/or commands God sends in response to our asking. In short, to listen, recognize, acknowledge, and follow the angels God sends in response to our asking.

There are no emergencies to this Mind. There are no surprises for the All-knowing. Each one of us can daily declare this Truth to be true of everyone, everywhere, any time. This includes the selfless individuals striving to find answers to the multitude of problems in Japan and Haiti, the statesmen working for peace throughout the world, a college student confronted with an ethics violation, or a 5-year old struggling with the principles of addition. There is no situation outside the infinitude of God – and that includes those encountered by me and you.

An Awakening

My husband and I were sitting in our family room, one evening 2 years ago, when he dropped off to sleep as we were watching TV. Suddenly, he seemed to wake up and announced that he couldn't see, and his eyes seemed to lose their luster, becoming opaque. I was so grateful to be able to calmly tell him that it wasn't true, and that he was having a bad dream. However, he was agitated, and began to try to stand up, but seemed uncoordinated. Even with my help, he could not stand. This happened a few times without success. He then fell back into the chair and I suggested that he take a nap.
I said, aloud, a quote from Science and Health, "God is everywhere and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." He was quiet and slept for a few minutes. I took out the Bible Lesson for that week, which was, "Substance". I knew God was right there with us, that only harmony was present and could not be reversed. Matter makes no conditions for man; God is our Life.
After a few minutes he wakened and his eyes looked normal. He said he thought he had had a stroke. I answered that it was only a bad dream. He wanted to get up and was able to, with my help.
I  suggested that we together go over the "punch list" for the small addition to our house that was in the final stages of completion. This was of interest to him and we went over the list, making additions and taking off deletions as we walked around the house. That night he took a shower and slept well. There has been no reoccurrence or bad effect from this experience, and I write it to serve as another instance of God's omnipotence and omnipresence, as well as the practicality of Christian Science.

HELP IN THE NIGHT

My errands recently called for me to visit a medical facility to comfort a friend.  I had noticed on a previous visit that there were signs, at each entrance to the building and the specific area of the facility, warning visitors to stay away if they were suffering from any kind of flu-like illness. These signs indicated that ignoring these warnings would put the patients at risk since they were already in a "weakened" condition.

After retiring in perfect health, I awoke in the middle of the night before my visit to find myself exhibiting extreme symptoms of flu-like sickness.  As I reached for tissues, the thought that came to me was that now I could not visit my friend because I would be putting her health in danger. The counteracting message  that came to me immediately from divine Love was, "A child of God cannot be a victim nor can you be attacked when you are acting from good motives."
I lay there and prayed to acknowledge God's law in operation - the law of Love and all good. I realized that I could not be a cause of harm to anyone because I would bring with me the view of man as God's perfect child, safe in His keeping. God has not created a man who is "weakened" - he is spiritual not material. If he could be a target, man would be a target out of range of this belief. When I awoke in the morning, I was completely free from any sense of illness or symptoms and was able to go to visit with joy.

No Change My Heart Shall Fear

We sang one of my favorite hymns last night, which begins "In heavenly Love abiding,  no change my heart shall fear..."  (Hymn 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal)  I've used that hymn a zillion times, from calming a 5 year old in a tizzy about starting kindergarten, to helping a new college freshman over first-day-on-campus jitters.  Knowing we abide with Love, God, and no matter what's swirling on around us on the winds of change, gives us the confidence to go forward no matter how daunting it may seem.  We always have and always will have, our place in the house of the unchanging, always loving, Father-Mother, God. Nothing can break that relationship.

Where to begin

The other night I was sitting in the lobby at church waiting for the Wednesday Testimony Meeting to begin.  My feet hurt and the pain rapidly increased.  I had walked into church with no discomfort but the longer I sat there, the worse they felt until I reached the point where I doubted my ability to get up and walk into the auditorium.

I remembered a phrase that I'd heard years ago when I was in college.  It often serves as a starting point for my prayers.  It goes, "Begin with God and see things as they are."

This idea effectively turns my thought away from the problem and refocuses it on God, the Only Cause and Creator.  From this starting point of perfection I can see myself as perfect because I am made in His image and likeness as stated in Genesis.

I view problems, in this case a physical one, as a temptation to believe that there is a cause outside of omnipotent God and an effect beyond infinite good.  In his prayer in the Sermon on the Mount which we call the Lord's Prayer, Christ Jesus includes the line, "And lead me not into temptation."  I know I am divinely supported in my efforts to resist temptation of any kind.

The truth about God is true about man as God made him and is true for me as a child of God.  The pain disappeared quickly and I went into the service completely free.

I Walk with Love

My knee hurt. Plain and simple, I wasn't having much fun walking the dog or even hobbling about my daily tasks. I complained about it. I came up with reasons for it to hurt, such as a strenuous weekend of hiking up and down. Then I woke up and decided to do what I should have done first.

I prayed to know I am a spiritual idea, not a mortal with an achy knee. As the idea of God, perfect in every way, where was there room for a bum knee? No way. Then the line from the hymn, "I walk with Love along the way, and oh, it is a holy day" came to me. As I snapped the leash on our dog to take her for her walk, I sang the hymn to myself. What a lovely time we had, marching crisply for a long trek around her favorite places. End of the complaining, both from me and the so-called knee. It was a lovely and holy day indeed.

Allergies

It would appear that food allergies, in fact allergies of all kinds, are rampant in today’s world. A ton of explanations are proffered as to the cause(s), yet people continue to suffer immensely as a result of these impositions. Because that’s what allergies are – an effort, in fact, a lie, to say that man is NOT created in the image and likeness of a loving God, and that environment, contaminants, or heredity can make him/her suffer from drinking cow’s milk, eating bread made from wheat, etc., or even breathing the scent of fresh grass. In praying about this mistaken belief, I’ve found this story about Elisha and the “death in the pot” stew very helpful. (King James Version) Elisha knew that God hadn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t create anything to harm His children, so those who ate from the pot weren’t condemned to die from ingesting a poisonous gourd stew. Neither are we condemned to suffer from seasonal, food, or environmental allergies.
II Kings 4:38

38 ¶ And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.

40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

God is my help

At the end of the other day I was having trouble with my right eye.  It was bloodshot and sore.  I ignored it thinking it was just irritated because it was dry and that it would be ok in the morning.

It wasn't.  It was so painful I literally taped it shut because it hurt even to blink.  This was no solution.

David knew God is the ultimate source of support.  He wrote, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." (Psalms 121)

I thought of the definition of God found in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.  It starts, "God: the great I AM, the all-knowing, all-seeing. . ."(S+H 587: 5)  I reasoned that if I am made in the image and likeness of God, as the Bible says, then my ability to see was God-given and could not be restricted or impeded by a material condition.

Then I thought of a statement from Miscellaneous Writings, also by Mrs. Eddy, that has supported my prayers many times.  "No evidence before the material senses can close my eyes to the scientific proof that God, good, is supreme." (Misc. 277: 23)  How appropriate.  How true.

That was the end of it.  The pain vanished.  I pulled the tape off and, in perfect comfort, saw clearly.

I'm grateful for understanding that God is always there for us to turn to when we need help.

What Christian Science Sunday School Did for Me

I am so grateful for having been raised in Christian Science and to have attended the Christian Science Sunday School. Even though I was only five, I can remember the Sunday School teacher's explination that God is my Father/Mother - a perfect parent who loves me unfailingly, who is the only power (good) and always present with me.

This had not been my human experience with my parents and at the time that I was enrolled in the Sunday School, I had been abandoned and left with relatives to be raised.

This gift of God as all good and as my only parents healed my grief and gave me courage and strength - it sustained me when the school councilor classified me as an at-risk student, because of my home situation.

The next big lesson I took away from Sunday School reversed this diagnosis - that human history has no power to determine today's experience. It could not touch my present.  All that was active in my life was right this moment - me and God - divine Love who was guarding and guiding my life. I could let go of the past and dwell in the present.

I had perfect attendance throughout 12 years of school and received outstanding grades, held many elective offices in high school and was a member of the principal's school leaders group.

Although there were no family funds for a college education, I was offered a full scholarship including housing when the time came.

We think it is a miracle when the rules are broken by which we tend to dictate the direction of our lives, but the truth is that your Father/Mother is teaching you to look through these self-created limitations and beliefs to see God's hand in all things.

Burn healed

The other day I was in the kitchen, when I reached into oven to pull out a cast iron skillet that was ready to come out. Even though I knew it would be very hot, I grabbed a small hot pad holder. As soon as I grasped the handle, I saw my bare palm on the metal. Releasing it instantly, I watched as my skin literally bubbled up.

I would like to say my first reaction was spiritually motivated, but it wasn't. After crying "ouch" I knew I had a choice. I could accept the pain screaming at me, or I could know the Truth, that there are no accidents in God's kingdom, and as a spiritual idea, I had no matter to burn. I chose Truth. Taking my stand for my God-given freedom from harm, I continued cooking. I can honestly say that this radical stance brought instant relief from the pain. I didn't look at my hand until late that night, and there were no blisters or marks of any kind.

I'm extremely grateful for this evidence of God's love ands care.

Crystal Clear Direction to Find Job

I spent several years feeling trapped in my job.  The word was underemployed and nowhere to go.  My attempts to find a new position seemed fruitless.  I decided it would be more fruitful to shift my thinking from a worldly, limited view of employment to a more spiritual outlook.

So, I strove to make the most of the work I had.  Also I prayed to God and listened for His guidance.  Although the small company for which I worked did not appear to have opportunities for growth, opportunities did appear.  I learned new skills.  Then there was a moment when I was praying about this issue and a clear message came to thought.  The message was: "this is the time for you to make a move.  Put everything into it."  It struck me how clear the message was and how close I felt to God.  Also, I felt such a certainty that it would all work out.  I was able to let go.   The "putting everything into it" meant to me putting my complete trust in God.

Within two days, a very unexpected opportunity surfaced in a new field.  I was not looking for it.  I felt like it was looking for me.  I have worked at this firm for over three years and am blessed every day with opportunities.  I really felt God's love for me in this experience and I know in my heart that everyone is unique, precious to God and filled with holy purpose.  It is this work that fulfills us.

I Love to Tell the Story

This week’s Bible Lesson, the sermon shared globally in every Christian Science church, is “Christ Jesus.” There isn’t a better story to tell! Hymn 414 contains these lines:

I love to tell the story

Of unseen things above

Of Jesus and his glory

Of Jesus and his love…

I love to tell the story

T’is pleasant to repeat

What seems each time I tell it,

More wonderfully sweet…

We all can relate, I’m sure.

John begins his introduction of the life of Christ Jesus with capsulizing all creation. “In the beginning as the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He continues, “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:3) This fundamental truth was the foundation of Jesus’ preaching and healing. The recognition of this truth brought healing to every form of disease, every type of sinful behavior, even death.

Combine this statement in Genesis, “And God saw all that he had made, and behold it was very good.” (Gen. 1:31) and the seal has been set on all that is real.

Creation was finished. God declared it good. There is no other creator. Jesus understood and proved this completely. He told the people, “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8: 22) This has always inspired me.

Beginning with God and seeing only his reality destroys every temptation to believe that there is something competing with God. Whenever presented with a situation or condition that would suggest something other than God, good, is in control, I turn again to these truths and recognize that I can experience only what God has created. Jesus showed me the way.

It’s no wonder I love to tell the story.

Make Time to Gain Time

As a college graduate student, I find myself these days doubting why I decided to take on three heavy loaded courses. I started out with four, and thank goodness I was wise enough to drop one I know I did not absolutely need. But now I find myself questioning if I should have dropped another.

The other night as I was checking off my "to do" list for class work and all the other stuff I needed to get done I was panicking. How the ***BLEEP*** was I going to get everything done. Deadlines are creeping up fast, and I seem to be working just fast enough to stay afloat. That was when I knew I needed to turn my thoughts to God. Before, I have turned to him knowing that with God, all things are possible. There is one Mind, the mind of God, and I share that Mind. I knew I could do the work, but could I get it done in time? There is was again, Time. Tick tock. Days are running into each other.

That night, as I climbed into bed, I opened up Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to the Glossary pages and read the definition of Time. This is what it say:

"TIME. Mortal measurements; limits, in which are summed up all human acts, thoughts, beliefs, opinions, knowledge; matter; error; that which begins before, and continues after, what is termed death, until the mortal disappears and spiritual perfection appears."

The very first line stood out to me. Mortal Measurements; limits, in which are summed up all human acts... Well I very much knew that in God's kingdom there are no limits. Would God, creator of all good, set up limits to define our human actions? I don't think so.

The next morning I woke up, read this statement again, and worked with it all day. I spent the whole day in the library doing assignments for this week, and while I didn't get everything done, I left knowing that I had made progress. At home I picked up an old Sentinel that I hadn't gotten to yet titled Faith: As a Grain of Mustard Seed. After reading a few articles, I felt that my faith in God to trust in him to get all my work done, had been fully restored. I went to work on some assignments in order to get ahead in a class, and wouldn’t you know it, time seemed to stand still for me? I got so much done in a half hour than I had in two hours. And this included sending important emails, and writing this.

Time might not stop for us, but we can know there are no limits when it comes to what we can do. Time does not need to be measured.

Another Prayer

I found a prayer written by Paul Stark Seeley, one that's a favorite with me.  "Pray daily that you may become increasingly conscious of your divine purpose - to evidence the limitless unfolding riches of life, health, wisdom, beauty, holiness and far-reaching service to God and your fellow man."

This reminds me that trusting in human ways and means isn't going to uplift and bless mankind: Only God can do that.

Humor and Healing

I can't tell you how many times a good laugh over the silliness of Mortal Mind has lifted me out of a so-called problem.  Know that old chestnut? How many Christian Scientists can you fit in a Honda?  Answer: An infinite number if they're in one Accord. The image alone makes me smile

I remember once I was dealing with a problem that, humanly speaking, looked pretty serious.  I was praying and working with a Christian Science practitioner (someone who helps people through prayer), and I was getting worse, not better.  Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to be impressed by this lie about me, no matter how loudly the pain was screaming at me that it was real, and I'd better believe in it, by golly!  No way.  At that point, the pain shifted from one side of my body to the other, and all I could do was laugh out loud at how preposterous the whole picture was. It was as if the pain was saying, "okay, you won't believe in me over here, so I'll move around somewhere else until you do believe in me."  That was the end of that problem.  Healing complete.

Having a good, solid chuckle at a lie never fails to defuse it of any supposed power it claims, but in reality, can't have.

MORNING PRAYER

One of my favorite morning prayers comes from an article that was published in the early days of the Christian Science Journal (see note).

Part of it reads:  "This is God's spiritual household. Nothing can enter to annoy or destroy. Nothing can enter to manifest sin, sickness, or discouragement, for God, good, governs every member of this household in perfect peace and love. God does in every deed dwell on earth with men and governs every event. The unseen silent forces of God are standing sentinel over me and mine and all, silencing, destroying, and annihilating the unseen, silent arguments of the serpent, material sense."

NOTE: In 1884 the Christian Science Journal was established as a monthly magazine which has continued in publication without interruption. The articles are contributed for publication by Christian Scientists dedicated to living Christian Science, a religion whose members subscribe to the tenet of taking: "the inspired word of the Bible" as their sufficient guide to eternal life.  All of these Journal articles have been archived in bound volumes and are available to the public in Christian Science Reading Rooms located in 81 countries throughout the world.

Love and Romance

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

This is an occasion to express our affection for our special ones. But love and romance are certainly two different qualities of thought. Romance often brings to thought an idealized human sense of love - a love affair.  The dictionary defines it as a strong, usually short-lived, attachment or enthusiasim. The actual love that we all desire is a lasting, growing, permanent attachment to others. The Bible gives us "Love" as another name for God, good, Spirit. The Lord's Prayer includes the plea, "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."In Mary Baker Eddy's spiritual interpretation of this line, she renders it, "And Love is reflected in love;". That is, God, good, Love in operation in our thoughts and actions is met with love.
Today is a good reminder for us to pray daily that we are loving, loved, and loveable! Know that you are loved by your Father/Mother God, Love, that your are precious to Her and your name is written in the palm of Her hand. (Isaish 49:16)
Much love to you!

Think About It

In the last book of the Old Testament the prophet Malachai poses an interesting question.  He asks "Have we not all one father?  hath not one God created us?" (Mal. 2: 10 to 2nd?)  He doesn't treat this as a rhetorical question.  And yet he doesn't answer it either.  He leaves it for us to ponder.

The person who answers this question is Jesus Christ.

In the fourth chapter of Matthew, following his defeat of the tempter after 40 days in the wilderness and his calling to Peter and Andrew and the sons of Zebedee, James and John, he begins his mission.  It states, "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease among the people."(Matt. 4: 23)  As a result the Bible tells us "his fame went throughout all Syria" and that "there followed him a great multitude."  It goes on to describe this multitude as "people from Gallilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan." (Matt. 4: 25)

When he saw this great multitude he went up into a mountain and the multitude followed him.  Beginning with the fifth chapter he delivers what we call the Sermon on the Mount.  In the midst of this sermon he teaches his followers how to pray, and in so doing he answers Malachai's question.  He begins what we call the Lord's Prayer with the phrase "Our Father." (Matt. 6: 9)

With this phrase he united everyone on that hillside into one brotherhood.  He acknowledged that there is but one Father, regardless of human background, and he answered Malachai's question with absolute conviction.  Mary Baker Eddy recognized this.  In Science and Health she writes, "It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.  Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established." (p. 467: 9-13)

As a Christian Scientist I strive to follow the directions and commands of the Master Christian.  Each time I pray the Lord's Prayer I am mindful that I am embracing all humanity.  Each and every person who offers this prayer is acknowledging that "Yes.  One God hath created us.  We all have one Father."

What a wonderfully inclusive idea at a time when there seem to be so many things that would divide us.

Computer issues overcome

Like most computer users, I expect the machine to work with no problems.  When issues crop up, I'm fairly adept at straightening them out, but this week I ran into a software problem I couldn't solve.  And it was important that it get solved.  I needed to print out reports for our accountant for our tax returns, and by accident, an older program had been loaded into the new computer.  The program ran, but printing the reports it generated seemed to be impossible. I researched online for a fix, and every single poster said the problem was insurmountable.  There was no way to print off the old program using our new operating system. Re-inputting all the information  into the newer program would take days, even weeks.

That's when I stopped using human logic and began to pray. I knew from my study of Christian Science that there's no such thing as a problem that can't be solved.  Since I know that God is Mind (a synonym for God), and as God's child I reflect the Divine Mind, and the Divine Mind never left a problem unsolved, I had access to everything I needed.  One Mind.  That's it.  Not many minds twirling in a panic.

So I stopped twirling and prayed. I started to see the situation as God sees it.  Was there an answer, of course there was! I rejected the idea of insurmountability.  I replaced that dark, depressing image of no usable answer to my problem with the truth, that God was in control of everything and everyone.  And I was thrilled to know there's a solution for every problem because God's control is unwavering.

I ceased worrying and fooling with the computer and went about doing other work.  It didn't take long for an idea to pop into my head, literally totally developed.  I knew right away how to implement it.  Problem solved. Report printed, albeit in a different format, but still what the accountant needed.  Believe me when I say I gave fervent thanks to God.

Life without Fear!

A public talk by Ginny Luedeman,CS, a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, will be given at the Christian Science Reading Room at 3431 W. Cary Street, Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, October 24, at 7 p.m. You are cordially invited to attend.

Life without fear - is such a life possible today, when there seems to be so much to be fearful about? What about the issues facing us every day - finances, health, children endangered or out of control, careers threatened by economic conditions, the challenges of life in the military? And then there are the global problems - economic, environmental, etc. Does fear, in some degree, seem to be a requirement to be responsible and concerned about these issues?

Ginny Luedeman learned how to face down fear through intelligent, responsible, effective prayer. Even when conditions were life-threatening or seemed hopeless, she overcame fear. For thirty years she's been helping others find comfort, confidence, and healing through prayer that doesn't just soothe fear, but lifts lives out of mind-sets and circumstances that induce fear and hide our capacity to live in a genuine state of dominion, safety, and well-being.

Watermelon Festival Pictures

Watermelon Festival! August 9 turned out to be a scorcher - a hundred degrees in the shade - but the temperature didn't keep the crowds at home. Second Church's tent in the middle of the street was busy with children having their faces painted while workers handed out Sentinels. The issue dealing with Spiritual Healthcare for Children was very popular. We had some interesting discussions, some of which continued inside the Reading Room for quite a while. Also inside the Reading Room, a large group of college-aged visitors visited and asked lots of great questions about Christian Science. Other first-time visitors expressed interest in finding out how we are different from the Scientology group headquartered just a block away, and we found we were able to clear up many misconceptions. Being a part of the Carytown festival is a wonderful way to open the Reading Room doors and bring us into the street with our fellow businesses. A few pictures follow!
